If you haven’t heard, Philip Pullman is publishing a collection of Grimm’s fairytales in the fall. He’s re-writing about fifty of them and will include many of the more obscure tales. Apparently he’s going to do the Juniper Tree, which is one of my favorites! It’s pretty gruesome. There’s some beheading, cannibalism, evil step-mom shenanigans, that sort of thing. But it’s also a pretty cool tale. If you have any interest in fairy tales, you should check it out.
In related news, 500 or so new fairytales were recently discovered in Germany (boy, the Guardian is on top of its fairy tale news!). That is pretty freaking cool. I’ve read some of her articles, etc, and her work is fascinating. Also at that link you can read the Turnip Princess, one of the newly discovered stories.
